There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling den gaming is not permitted. Eight casinos are situated in a generally small location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime location, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a few limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; although, financial sources are vague. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 17:00, and though visas are apparently required to cross, there are means around this, as is true of most border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, highlights 150 one armed bandits and 60 table games. The Naga casino is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-around vacation and hotel complex that highlights numerous luxuries on top of the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and 88 tables.
